Week 07

Please answer one of the two questions about our trip to the City Garden posted on the Week 6 page.

We’ll return to the material on arts and community development for this class.

In this class we’ll go over the class project, the Instant Exhibit. Please note the new page on the blog, Class Project, where all materials for the exhibit will be posted.

  1. Waffle Costumes!
    Shark Costumes!
    Hot Dog Costumes!
    Panda Bear Costumes!

Just a list of all the things we’ll need for this to be successful!

    Any ideas for theme yet?

  2. Lo and I were talking about an edible show. It would take all the work out of dissasembling if the guests were invited to consume the instillation peice by peice. Jello, Rice Crispies, and Marzipan all make great sculptural mediums… and they are cheaper than blick materials… which is something to consider if we are going to be comming out of pocket. Also, the waffle and hot dog costumes would be fitting. What do you think?

  3. I like the idea of not having to dissassemble and clean up, especially because not a lot of us are going to be able to stay after noon. An edible exhibition would be awesome, and we could even do something like what we were shown in class where we have small multiple pieces that people are allowed to take with them when they leave.

Whatever we decide on for a theme, I think this is going to be an awesome project and great experience for each one of us!

  4. I agree that the edible show is a great idea for pracical and conceptual reasons. However there’s alot to consider – like how many participants will we get consider the limited kitchen spaces. And it is very specified so how many people would be interested in contributing? Just a few things to think about. I’d love to hear other ideas as well. I really like the idea of viewer participation. Maybe we could de something where the gallery goers actually create the final exhibition piece? I can’t wait to hear what everyone’s ideas are!

  5. These are great ideas and a great flow. I do think it might be good to have comments related to this project on the class project page… what do you think?

  6. what about creating a piece for donation to a “good cause”? ie: take a small piece of art, pay say a dollar or 50 cents or something, and the funds raised go to a cause of our choice – say youth homelessness or environmantal … brainstorm required here for some interesting causes … it could be difficult to try and avoid it becoming simply about fundraising … but it is an idea! cheers!

  7. I wasn’t at the class, but does anyone know the name of the New York artist who cooked Pad Thai at gallery openings? I think his work ties a lot into the themes of making a community and a sort of etherealness in artwork.

  8. i think the edible and donation ideas are excellent and i definetly want to pursue both. for practical reasons, i think we might need to combine edible work with work of not so much of an edible nature. also, if we decide to work with food, we need to think about hygiene and expiration date type things. i already mentioned the instant exhibit to my sculpture class and everyone seemed pretty interested in submitting work/in the idea!

  9. I think both edible show and the fundraising ideas are great. I’m excited to share all our ideas. I can’t imagine how edible art show would work so i would love to hear more about. I like the creating show for donation better, we could come up with detail theme for the exhibition with that idea. Or we could come up with our own art pieces that relates to our class subject. Something we’ve been discussing about in class. It is definitely an experience!

  10. I am all about an edible exhibit. Alot of times food is what draws people into the gallery. What if we had a sort of edible art trade where people came in and made their own edible art and traded it with someone else. That way all edible art would be fresh and we wouldn’t have to worry about expiration dates.
I don’t think the donation idea would work only because everyone here is on a pretty tight budget already and probably wouldn’t jump at the chance to give away their money.

  11. I am really excited about this class exhibit. I wish we had a good theme that everyone agrees with !

  12. It was unfortunate to miss last class. However I think if we have something interesting theme for the class exhibition, it would be great. I want to listen other people thoughts about theme for the exhibition.

  13. Hae-Sung Chung

The idea itself is already unique, and i am all in.
Not only looking at some kind of exhibit, but really getting into thinking of it. I think almost everyone is pretty interested in so far..I would like to hear more!
