Temporary Services – Temporary Services is a group of three persons: Brett Bloom, Salem Collo-Julin and Marc Fischer. We draw on our varied backgrounds and interests to produce creative exhibitions, events, projects and publications. Within our work we create socially dynamic situations and spaces for dialogue. We collaborate both together and with others outside of our group. The distinction between art practice and other creative human endeavors is irrelevant to us. Our projects embrace a range of content that requires varied visual approaches and presentation strategies.

Chicago Calling Project – During the 2nd Annual Chicago Calling Arts Festival, Chicago-based artists will showcase performances and projects that involve collaborations with artists living in other locations—here in the U.S. and in other countries worldwide. The collaborations between Chicago-based artists and those living elsewhere will be prepared, improvised, or a combination of both. For instance, a Chicago-based poet will be collaborating with a visual artist from Virginia, a Chicago-based ensemble will be collaborating with a musician from New York, and so on. Some of the performances will involve live feeds between Chicago and elsewhere.

A Million Little Pictures – The project allowed anyone, anywhere, to request a disposable camera from the gallery, snap some shots, and return it to have their work displayed at the show. The project was a smash hit: With such a low barrier to participation, the cameras didn’t come close to fulfilling demand. “One of the charms is that you don’t have to be an artist,” says Peterman. But what came back in the mail was art, striking snapshots from people in almost every state. Art House, based in Decatur, Georgia, recently displayed a second installment, on the theme of “family.” And more shows are on the way—Peterman and Zucker plan to take the project on the road next summer.

Rudolf Stingel at the Whitney – Since Rudolf Stingel’s sleek midcareer survey opened at the Whitney Museum of American art in June, hundreds of visitors have been allowed to depart radically from traditional museum protocol (hands off) and have a go at the walls in the exhibition’s first gallery, using anything they happen to have with them: pens, money, credit cards, cellphones.

5 responses to “Class Project

  1. Waffle Costumes!

  2. I really like the idea of working with found objects – letting people take them, paint them, whatever and really working with the idea of what art is and pushing the boundaries of the gallery space we have. So I’m really excited about that.

  3. I’m going to start working on making a radio-esque audio “commercial” . . . if you will. (Could that get more obscure?) so if anybody has any suggestions, shoot me an email or tell me about i in class. If anybody wants to be the “voice” . . . the same applies. Peace Peace.

  4. If any of the groups are going to be doing anything or getting together can they please contact their documentation person so they can be there and take pictures of your process. Thank you!

  5. From meeting at the Rymer Gallery, 11/16…

    PROMO:
For the press release, there are some standards to follow (an example will be forwarded soon) and it does have to go through the communication department first. That info is coming from Trevor as well. I will forward as soon as I get it.

    GALLERY STUFF:
    • There are three walls open in the back.
    • We can use tape on the floor.
    • Ceiling can be used in some places – there are some limitations.
    • We can use low level lighting or flashlights (at one point Trevor mentioned hanging flashlights as “spotlights” for the objects on the floor).
    • We can put paper on the floor, but it should be taped at edges.
    • If we need pedestals there are some — we should discuss how this aesthetic device would effect our concept
    • I forgot to ask about a monitor (should we have asked about that?)
    • We can hang a drawing on the wall outside the gallery (at Columbus entrance) a few days before Dec. 6.
    • We can also use tape on the floor outside of the Rymer as well. Any material that can be pulled up and people won’t trip over.

    STORAGE:
Drop off times with some (not a ton) storage for artists to deliver projects: Saturday 10-5, Dec 1 and Tues or Wed (dec 4/5). One of us should be there to accept deliveries and inventory incoming work. So you can change those hours above, but those are the gallery hours.

Who met today: Rob, Lora, Trevor
