“Take the Streets With You” Came and Went!

Our class exhibit “Take the Streets With You” opened and closed on Thursday, December 6. Set up to resemble a cityscape, dozens of boxes were assembled, decorated and disassembled. Viewers became part of the exhibit as they added their own tags, markings, pictures and embellishments to the facade of blank boxes. Inside the Betty Rymer Gallery artists submitted works of customized and sculptural boxes were displayed against a swirl of architectural plans and blueprints (rescued from a dumpster at the Carson Pirie Scott renovation project). At the end of the exhibit passers-by were invited to take the art work home and many did!

We produce our own exhibit!

The students of the Fall 2007 edition of “The Art of Crossing the Street – the Artist as Citizen” at the School of the Art Institute are producing their own art exhibit at the Betty Rymer Gallery on December 6th! It’s an instant exhibit that will be produced, visited and then taken down in less than one day!

From the call for submissions: “Are you interested in displaying your work while participating in a show that goes beyond the sterile snobbery of the typical gallery? If you are, then pay attention, because we are inviting artists to submit work for “Take The Streets With You”, an exhibition to be set up and taken down the very same day. The exhibit date is December 6th and is part of the Fluxuations series at the Betty Rymer Gallery. The exhibit starts at 9 am and ends at 4 pm that day. The idea here is the art of the city. Thus work will be exhibited alongside a sound/video installation by Paul Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky about the city of Chicago.” Read more…

Advice to a Young Artist

empty canvasThis post is directed at the faculty and staff of the Art Institute and the School of the Art Institute. What would you like to say to a class of mostly freshman students who are taking “The Art of Crossing the Street”? This class is about investigating the role of the artist in society and involves critical readings, field trips, visits from faculty experts and a class project where the students work in teams.

Possible questions to guide your comments: Why do you create? How do you support yourself? What would you have done differently? What guidelines do you follow to keep yourself fresh and engaged? Who inspires you? Thank you!

Welcome to the Crossing

OK – you’ve gotten this far. Great. First assignment:

Each student will post at least one reflection on this blog for each week AND one comment on someone else’s reflection.

In your first reflection, please do two things:

(1) What should we talking about in this weekly blog? Simply comment on what you learned in class that week? Reflect upon some image or text you encountered that deals with artists or descriptions of artists? Something else?

(2) What (if any) should the rules of the blog be regarding types and tone of your comments?

Let the fun begin. Vincent Van Goat - get it?
